The critically acclaimed CraveTV series, Heated Rivalry, has sparked a cultural phenomenon due to the dual portrayal of its two seemingly star-crossed protagonists, professional hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. As this paper will show, the motifs present in this modern series are far from new. Even as far back as the Epic of Gilgamesh, history and legend show plenty of examples where the fires of rivalry and romantic companionship burn with an equal flame.

Dustin Cranford received his BA’s in History and Classics and MA in History from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He received his PhD in ancient Hellenistic history from the University of Maryland, College Park. His dissertation, “Seeds of Discord,” examines the use of extraordinary commands and their effect on the institutional stability of the Roman Republic.
